MLSE CONTINUES ITS EFFORTS TO ‘CHANGE THE GAME’ FOR YOUTH BY MATCHING DONATIONS TO MLSE FOUNDATION ON GIVING TUESDAY
MLSE Foundation is continuing to raise funds and invest in youth through its Change the Game campaign this Giving Tuesday. From November 28 to December 4, all donations will be matched by MLSE (up to $250,000). Change the Game is centered on building equity for youth through proven community investment streams, allowing for greater access to free sport programs, increased support of community partners and increased opportunities for leadership in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
“When we launched Change the Game in February, we focused on creating awareness of the systemic barriers that many youth face and how we’re going to invest $30 million over four years to level the playing field,” said Tanya Mruck, Vice President, Community Engagement & Social Impact, MLSE. “It’s now time to invite people on this journey with us. Giving Tuesday is an industry-wide opportunity for donors and our community to give back, and we want to encourage our fans to get involved now because they’re donation will be doubled with MLSE’s support.”
Since the launch of Change the Game in early 2021, MLSE Foundation has challenged the status quo in Canadian philanthropy by partnering with and investing $1 million in the Foundation for Black Communities (FFBC) to support the growth of Black-led, Black-serving and Black-focused organizations across Ontario. MLSE Foundation launched the largest youth sports study of its kind in Canada, studying access and equity factors in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. From there, the organization used those findings to make a $1 million investment in grassroots sport organizations and played a key role in bringing back community sport to youth across the Greater Toronto Area.
MLSE Foundation is currently leading an infrastructure investment in the city of London as a part of MLSE’s overarching commitment to uplift the city and community. In conjunction, MLSE Foundation is leading a court refurbishment in Manitoulin Island with Sheguiandah First Nation.
The impactful Change the Game campaign commercial featured youth that MLSE Foundation works with and was filmed in locations the organization has invested in. Two of the individuals involved in the campaign spot who have been impacted by MLSE Foundation include:
· Oweme: Born in Nigeria, Oweme and his family arrived in Canada in the summer of 2018 to start a new life. He had a passion to give back to the community and started volunteering at MLSE LaunchPad. Over the years, his involvement at MLSE LaunchPad has also evolved and he is now part of the coaching staff leading the next generation of youth.
· Amina: Not only did Amina appear in the campaign spot, she also created a photography project capturing the making of the campaign through her own eyes and experience. She has spent four years working at MLSE LaunchPad as a coach and exemplifies the representation she wished she had growing up.
In the past 10 years, MLSE Foundation has raised and invested more than $45 million into Ontario communities. For further information on MLSE Foundation and to donate, visit mlsefoundation.org.
