Lay-Up Youth Basketball
Naishla is a fan of LeBron James because of his offensive abilities, and she focuses hard on every drill during Lay-Up programming so she can get to his level. But Lay-Up is about more than just working on your shot. Interacting with new participants is also a chance to develop new friendships. “I think Lay-Up helps us improve our social skills,” she says. Scrimmages are typically a favorite for Lay-Up participants, and Naishla is no different. She loves having a chance to put all her skills together in a live game. “During the scrimmages you get to work on teamwork and cooperation. Basketball isn’t just about skill—it’s about attitude, discipline, and respect as well”.
MLSE Foundation’s partnership with Lay Up Youth Basketball has significantly increased access for children and youth in the community of Regent Park, St James Town and Moss Park.
At Lay-Up, they focus on the empowerment of children and youth through programming that promotes and supports physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In addition to teaching fundamental skills of basketball, Lay-Up has a comprehensive off court curriculum where participants spend time working on personal development centered around academics, life skills, career, healthy living, and community.
The Lay-Up program is doing tremendous work to bridge opportunity gaps for kids in priority neighbourhoods across Toronto. Lay Up programming gives children opportunities to get active playing basketball, but just as importantly there is also a leadership and academic component to their programming.
